Sight Words

Like all Kindergartners Blake was given a list of sight words that he had to learn. His teacher divided the sight words up into colored groups. Once they learned a color set they would get cookies and would be given the next group of sight words. When Blake was first starting out he became very discouraged because he would get stuck on some words. He would tell me about how smart Irene is in his class and that she knows all her cookie (sight) words. I would tell him to not compare himself to her and that he was doing a great job. I finally told him I would buy him any toy he wanted once he passed all his sight words off. This got him excited and motivated to learn all his words. He wanted Lego Star Wars for his prize. And so I would remind him whenever he would get discouraged that he was almost done and he would get his Lego Star Wars when he was done. Well over his break this month he was having problems with two of his last words and was complaining and not wanting to practice his words, so I went out and bought the star wars that he wanted. I told him he could look at the box after every time he practiced his words. Well all of the sudden he always wanted to practice his sight words all the time and was able remember his last sight words he was struggling with.
Today was Blake's first day back at school after being off for the month. He knew all his words and was going to be tested on them. This morning before school Blake said our family prayer. In his pray he prayed that he would pass off his sight words. He also prayed that Dad, Mom, Logan, and Sadie would be proud of him when he passed of his sight words. When he came home from school today he was excited to tell us he passed off all his sight words. Blake was so happy and he finally got to open his Lego Star Wars. We are all so very proud of Blake!
